The mission of the HRD program is to educate and train individuals for success in the workplace. This program is a statewide initiative sponsored by the NC Community College System. The role of HRD is to serve unemployed and underemployed individuals across Mecklenburg County who are struggling to deal with the stark transitions taking place as a result of the economy. The HRD program at CPCC provides no cost skills assessment services, employability skills training and career development advising to individuals in transition and in the emerging workforce. The courses taught in this program address assessment of an individual's assets and limitations' development of positive self concept, employability, communication and problem solving skills and awareness of the impact of information technology in the workplace.

Eligibility
The classes are offered at no cost for individuals who meet one of the following conditions:

  • They are unemployed
  • They received notice of a pending layoff
  • They are working and are eligible for Federal Earned Income Tax Credit
  • They are working and earning at or below 200 percent of Federal Poverty Guidelines

Learners will also gain life skills and develop a positive self-concept that will enhance their employability and job performance. Technology skills and job search techniques will be explored; all learners will also register for NC Works. Learners can prepare and practice for the Career Readiness Certificate (CRC) using KeyTrain software and complete the exam. This course assists students in understanding and articulating their personal qualities and strengths, previous work-related experiences, and knowledge sets. It focuses on empowering students to acquire and retain employment, and create a plan for future career advancement.

This course is designed to provide employability skills to full-time, part-time, and transitioning job-seekers in an expedited manner. Learners will obtain tips and techniques for creating and updating their resumes, participating in one-on-one and group interviews, and workplace behaviors. Career planning and education planning will also be explored. Typically a one-day course, the Job Ready BOOTCAMP is a great way to brush up on your job readiness skills.

Students will learn the components of an effective resume, including organization and formatting, and how to customize their own resumes to convey greater confidence. This course focuses on the essentials of securing a job in today's rapidly-changing market including updating resumes, professional networking, writing cover letters, and marketing personal brands. Students will learn how to make sure their resume stands out and survives the competitive online sorting process to land in the employer's hands. This course provides learners with employability skills training for unemployed and underemployed adults. The Job Ready Centers will provide learners with hands-on instruction to assist in gaining resume, interview, and application completion skills. Learners will also have support and assistance in applying for jobs, completing employment paperwork, and registering for NC Works.

This course is designed to fully introduce the computer to learners for the first time. Learners will focus on all functions of the computer, including using the current Windows operating system, Microsoft Office software, internet searches, and basic keyboarding. Create forms and documents using Microsoft Office to track job applications, log resume distribution, and utilize salary charts. Compose error-free resumes and cover letters while improving typing skills and complete online job applications and employer correspondence.
